Our clients requested that we convert their barren garage
rooftop into a relaxing, leisure space to entertain friends,
enjoy a twilight dinner, or simply escape the rigors of urban
life.
To create a sense of seclusion, we installed a horizontal-patterned
fence along the perimeter, which visually unites the space
while hiding the power lines and alleyway clutter of a typical
Chicago back yard. The steel pergola structure enforces this
feeling of seclusion, with its retractable awnings offering
an option of shelter from the sun.
The planters are complimented with hardy shrubs, a mixture
of perennials and seasonal annuals to provide color throughout
the four seasons. And, since each planter is provided with
a micro-irrigation line, the client is freed from the constant
attention these plants would otherwise require.
A locally-sourced statue acts as a focal point upon entrance
and exit, and the beds of Mexican pebbles soften the space,
uniting all of these design elements into one cohesive outdoor
retreat.
